HTC One S: 1.7 GHz Snapdragon Variant Confirmed

The HTC One S launching in the Asia Pacific region and select (unspecified) European markets will be powered by the Snapdragon S3 processor instead of the S4 variant seen in the rest of the world. Both Snapdragon processors are dual core with the newer S4 being clocked at 1.5 GHz versus the S3’s 1.7 Ghz clock speed. Although the clock speed on the S3 is higher (albeit by 200 MHz) the S4 is actually more advantageous to have since its CPU is  on a 28 nm process vs the 45 nm process of the S3. This translates to the S4 being a more powerful and less power hungry chip than the S3.

The reason for the change in specifications has been attributed to a shortage of S4 chips. HTC has stated that despite the change in chipset, they have ensured that the S3 wielding One S will perform at the same high level set as the original S4 One S. If you were planning on ordering this phone, be sure to double check the spec sheet to know which version you are getting.
