Microsoft Announces SurfaceTablet Powered by Windows 8

Microsoft’s major announcement is a new Microsoft branded Surface Tablet. It will be available in a Windows RT version and a Pro Windows 8 version. The Surface tablet measures out at 9.3mm thin and weighs 1.5 lbs. It possesses a 10.6 inch Clear Type HD display (full 1080p display for the Pro version), Corning Gorilla Glass 2 and has a built in kickstand (.7 mm thin). The new display type helps minimize the tablet’s thickness and also helps preserve precious battery life due to a lower energy demand. The Surface tablet is the first tablet to be housed inside of a full magnesium case…Microsoft is calling this the VaporMg case. A USB 2.0 port is built into the RT version (3.0 for pro version), along with HDMI, and front and rear cameras.

A very cool accessory that was demoed alongside the Surface Tablet was the Surface Type cover. The cover is 3mm thick and also functions as a clickable multitouch touchpad with left and right mouse buttons. The cover was created to be thin so that people would be encouraged to carry it with them. It is made up of seven layers which “measure every gram of force” used while typing and also features palm rejection.

Surface for Windows RT will have a 32GB and a 64GB version. Microsoft has said it will be priced similar to other tablets based on ARM. The Pro version of the Surface will come in 64GB and 128GB flavors . Pricing of these will be similar to Ultrabook PC’s. Surface of Windows RT will be available at Windows 8 launch and the Pro will be available three months later.

Stay tuned for more details on the Surface Tablet
